You know the feeling. You're about to walk on stage, or open a test, or send a text you can't take back, and your stomach does something. It tightens. Your gut runs a nervous system of its own. Lining its walls is a web of around 500 million nerve cells, more than you'll find in a cat's brain. That direct line has a name: the vagus nerve. It's one of the longest nerves in your body, running from your brainstem down through your chest and into your gut, wiring the two brains together like a cable between two machines.
You'd assume the brain in your head is in charge, barking orders down to the gut, right? Believe it or not, it's mostly the other way around.
Along the vagus nerve, far more signals travel up from your gut to your brain than down from your brain to your gut. By most estimates, something like four out of every five messages are headed upward.
Your gut is constantly reporting to your brain, sending a steady stream of updates about what's going on down there, and your brain is listening more than it's talking.
So a “gut feeling” is more literal than it sounds. When something feels off in your stomach, your gut picks up on it and sends that signal straight to your brain.
Why you feel it
So back to that stomach drop before a big moment. When your brain decides something is stressful, like a test or a confrontation, it switches your body into fight-or-flight mode, the high-alert state your body evolved to react to danger fast. Your heart speeds up, your muscles tense, and digesting your lunch drops way down your body's list of priorities. Your brain sends signals down to your gut telling it to slow down.
You feel that as the symptoms. When digestion pauses, you get that queasy, butterflies feeling. Sometimes your gut speeds up instead, which is the reason nerves can send you sprinting to the bathroom before something big. Your stomach is reacting to your brain in real time.

What about your mood?
You've probably heard that most of your serotonin, one of the chemicals tied to mood, is made in your gut. It's true. Around 90 percent of the serotonin in your body gets produced down there, not in your brain.
From there, it's easy to assume that fixing your gut would fix your mood. But that’s not quite how it works. The serotonin made in your gut mostly stays in your gut, where it helps run digestion, triggering the muscle squeezes that move food along. It doesn't just travel up to your brain and flip how you feel.
Whether your gut can actually change your mood, beyond the butterflies, is a real question scientists are still working on. The truth is they don't fully know yet. Most of the big, confident claims you'll see online are way ahead of what anyone's actually proven, especially the products promising to fix your mood by fixing your gut.
Even so, the clearest part of the gut-brain link is stress. A stressed-out body usually means a stressed-out gut, and the science shows that calming one tends to calm the other. Sleep, movement, or time away from whatever's winding you up all help settle your stomach as well. That won't fix a bad week on its own, but it genuinely helps, so it’s worth trying the next time nerves hit.

Your gut and your brain are tied together for life. You can't unlink them, and you definitely wouldn’t want to. The gut-brain connection is part of how your body keeps itself running without you micromanaging every meal.
